Tips on Beating the 2012 Crowd
It’s our busy time of year at the Y. The Y is bustling with New Year excitement and we’re loving it! We exist to strengthen the community, and this is when we see and help the most members. Together we have the opportunity to improve lives. While it truly is wonderful to see the Y booming, here are some TIPS on beating the crowd.
“No place to park”… One of our pillars is healthy living. We encourage everyone to live a healthy lifestyle. No matter if you are picking up your child or working out, parking a little farther away is good for your heart and health. It may be cold, but your body burns more calories in cold temperatures because it is working hard to stay warm! We challenge you to park on Main Street, West Avenue or Greig Terrace; you will add steps onto your day and burn more calories. And, parking at our Y is always free!
Beating the 5 o’clock crowd… Try a new exercise class or different time to work out to bypass the busy times. It’s good for your mind and muscles to explore other exercise routines. Join us during lunch for one of our new classes, Cardio Pump or Zumba! It is a great way to burn pre-lunch calories and finish your workout before 5 o’clock. You could also wake up before the sun, and join us when we open at 5:30 am. It is probably the best time of day to work out. Here is our group exercise schedule. Find something new!
No matter what, hang in there. Don’t get frustrated at how busy it is here, be grateful you are a part of something huge and know we are always here for you.

Thompson Health Sports Medicine Classes are Back!
We are partnering with the Sports Medicine Center at Thompson Health to offer educational programs here at the Y. Each program works to show you how to move properly, reducing your injury risk. Join WIPP (Warm-up for Injury Prevention and Performance), Golf Fit, or Tuff Cuff to stay healthy and strong. Read more about each program, and see what fits you best!
WIPP (Warm-up for Injury Prevention and Performance): Warming up is the most common thing people forget prior to working out, but it is the most important! Your muscles need to be warmed up to decrease the likelihood of an injury. WIPP is a specifically designed warm-up program incorporating five components of Sportsmetrics for maximum efficiency and conditioning: Dynamic Warm-Up, Plyometrics, Strength, Flexibility and Agility. Learn how to incorporate these moves into your fitness routine.
Cost: 10 members/$15 non-members

March 1 – 4:00 – 5:00 pm

Dates: February 7 – 1 – 2:30 pm
March 6 – 1 – 2:30 pm
Tuff Cuff: This program is intended to increase endurance and strength of smaller muscles like the rotator cuff and elbow joint. They play in acceleration and deceleration during the throwing motion, there is a great deal of stress placed upon them throughout a season. After this program, you will have a better understanding of how to properly strengthen your rotator cuff prior to throwing, as well as how to maintain strength during the season. The strengthening exercises will be taught in addition to a proper warm-up and throwing program. A certified athletic trainer from Thompson Health’s sports medicine center will teach you how to get stronger, stay strong and decrease your chance of injury.

Canandaigua Aquatics – Full “Streamline” Ahead
Our YMCA competitive swim team, Canandaigua Aquatics, is off to a great start this season. The team has 21 new swimmers for a total of 113 members, ranging in age from 5 to 18. Six dedicated coaches, under the direction of Head Coach Dave Beckwith have led the team to 3 wins and 1 loss after the first four meets. More impressively, however, is that the 113 swimmers have achieved best times, and 41 swimmers have already qualified for the New York State Championship meet which will be held March in Buffalo.
These swimmers are on their way to another record breaking season. Way to go Aquatics; keep up the good work.
Now Help the team help others: In support of the Canandaigua community, Canandaigua Aquatics will be holding a food drive during the holidays. From December 6 to December 24 food will be collected for Gleaner’s Kitchen. Please bring your non-perishable food items (canned goods, boxed pasta, rice, etc..). to the box at the Y by December 24; help us give a delicious meal to less fortunate in our community.
Give the Gift of the YMCA
What’s a better holiday gift than a gift card to the YMCA. We are a one-stop shop; buy a gift card for someone you love and burn some pre-holiday calories.
Gift cards will be sold all year round for any amount. It can be used for programs, visits, or a membership. Do you know someone who wants to join the Y, but hasn’t taken the time to purchase a membership? Help them join us.
Every day at the Y, people of all ages are coming together to get and stay healthy. Children are engaging in physical activities, learning social skills and building self-confidence; adults are enjoying working out and participating in group activities and seniors are learning about proper nutrition. It’s happening every day at the Y — people of all ages are getting healthier and living better through fitness, sports, fun and shared interests. Give someone the gift to JOIN US.
Tell your Friends and Family…No Joiner’s Fee at the YMCA
You know how the Y has changed your life or your child’s life; now is the time to tell your friends and family to join, so they can experience the community center.
We are WAIVING the Joiner’s Fee from December 19 – January 1. SPECIAL Gift for those signing up between December 19 and December 31 for a family membership, each will receive a $15 gift card to use towards programs. It’s a gift for you too because now you can spend more time with your friends and family.
Year after year New Year’s rolls around and people make the resolution that this is the year to lose weight. At the Y we believe that 2012 is your year, but we don’t want you to lose weight; we want you to build a healthier you for a lifetime. We are so much more than a health facility; we nurture the potential of kids, help people understand and improve their health, and provide opportunities to give back and support neighbors. Create a stronger you and community!
