Congratulations to the Canandaigua Aquatics on a fantastic 2011-2012 swim season. The team welcomed 24 NEW swimmers and finished with only ONE loss. On Sunday, May 6 the Aquatic family came together to celebrate their season at the team banquet. Numerous kids were presented with awards on their swim accomplishments, but it was also about their accomplishments out of the pool as a team. They are true leaders in the pool, school and community.

Throughout the year the Aquatics took time out to give back to the community. On Christmas Day the team made dinners for those less fortunate. Even more importantly the team helped out one of their own! The team dedicated their annual swim challenge to Emily Luna’s Entourage Fund. It is amazing to see these young children stepping up to help one of their extended family members. Helping others and working as a team is truly what the Canandaigua Aquatics are all about.

The team also celebrated 5 seniors who have grown up on the team and are now headed off on new adventures. Sarah Benson, Kate McCormick, Meghan McCormick, Nick Ringhoff and Jared Sharza are all headed off in August to college. Good luck with future endeavors and thank you for all the years.

Finally, congratulations to Thomas Chapman who received the big award of the night – the Nathan Romano Memorial Award. This award is in memory of Nathan Romano who swam on the Aquatics from 2007-2009. It recognizes a swimmer who displays dedication, self-motivation, leadership, team spirit and the unselfish willingness to help coaches and/or other team members. These are all the attributes that Nathan had while on the team. Thank you Thomas for emulating Nathan Romano; thank you for being such a pillar of the team.

February 9 was a very special night for fathers because they got to spin their little angel around the dance floor at the Father Daughter Dance. It really was an amazing night for the dancers and non-dancers. More than 45 girls came with their father to dance around and get their picture taken by Chesler Photography. It will be an evening never to be forgotten. Thank you to Sweet Expressions who donated a huge bag of candy to each girl and Stella’s Florist for donating corsages for each little princesses.

We were featured in the Daily Messenger regarding bringing your workout indoors during the winter months. Ingrid Lagoe from our Train 2 Tri program was interviewed.

The Canandaigua Y celebrates those who have entered the Master’s Generation.

We want to celebrate all of the Active Older Adults in our community, so we have a whole week of events planned for you; May 23 – May 27. Our focus this year is on tools for everyday living. Our friends at the American Red Cross will be on hand teaching CPR and the Heimlich maneuver.

The delicious lunch and learn on Wednesday, May 25 will be with retired health instructor from Marcus Whitman and current YMCA lifeguard, Ellen Monagan, who will present on SLEEP! Sleep deprivation is a huge issue in Americans. People constantly battle counting the sheep. Monagan will present on the close relationship between a persons’ health and sleep. The catered lunch will be an assortment of Asian inspired food from Wegmans.

For more information and registration for senior week stop at the Welcome Desk by May 23! Call your insurance company now to learn about Silver Sneakers or the Go-Getter’s program. Please also feel free to contact Marianne Timms, active older adult’s coordinator, at 585-394-6866 with any questions!
